Stockholders, creditors, and private investors often need assurance that the financial statements accurately present the true financial position of a company. In addition, some other types of entities must undergo an annual audit as well. These can include not-for-profit organizations, retirement and benefit plans, local governments, and other organizations receiving government grants.

An audit provides the highest level of assurance. An audit is a methodical review and objective examination of the financial statements. Based on findings, we issue a report on whether the financial statements are fairly stated and free from material misstatements.

Less extensive than an audit, but more involved than a compilation, a review engagement consists primarily of analytical procedures applied to the financial statements, and various inquiries of your company’s or organization’s management team. Based on findings, a report is issued on whether we are aware of any material modifications that should be made to the financial statements.

In a compilation, the financial statements are the “representation of management.” Compilations don’t require inquiries of management or analytical procedures. Instead, we rely on knowledge of accounting principles and a general understanding of your organization. The compilation report issued states that the financial statements were not audited or reviewed and that no opinion, conclusion or assurance can be expressed on the financial statements by us.
